Don't skimp when it comes to the cornerstone of your living room.

What makes a luxury sofa worth the splurge? And how do you know you're getting the most bang for your buck? ELLE Decor asked experts to weigh in on how they shop for the best options on the market.

"The most luxurious sofas balance comfort, structure, and longevity," says Keren Richter, co-founder and principal of White Arrow. "The gold standard is a down-and-feather-wrapped, high-resiliency foam core. It gives the down softness with a supportive structure that maintains shape over time." Other key factors to note include seat pitch and depth, hand-finished seams, and specialty fabrics. ELLE Decor A-List designer Augusta Hoffman leans towards options that are "sculptural and chic," while A-List designer Alyssa Kapito recommends a fully down sofa for its look and feel (though concedes the styles take "maintenance and fluffing").

Brittney Hart, of the A-List firm Husband Wife, opts for designs with classic, clean lines and a "slight looseness." "We lean toward sofas with multiple loose seat cushions within an upholstered body and shy away from designs with tight upholstery that feels too strict, rigid or unforgiving," says Hart. "A perfect case study for our ideal sofa is the Jean Michel Frank Club Sofa, or, in contrast, early Vladimir Kagan curved sofas with a seat cushion."

Whatever your personal preference may be, we took these pro tips and used them on our hunt for the best luxury sofas money can buy. Read on to find your favorite.

Hoffman recommends Dmitriy & Co's Chelsea Square Mono sofa for its timelessness. The sofa features a bench cushion with a foam and down fill and a loose Turkish corner back cushion in a down and feather fill.

Hem calls their new Philippe Malouin Great Sofa "more landscape than furniture." Indeed, the fully modular system could take up your whole living room, if you wanted it to, but can also be configured as a love seat.

The Moreau sofa by Pinch features classic camel-back lines and deep cushions. Richter praises the seat's comfortable and supportive design and stylish silhouette. Also available as a bed, the Moreau comes in a wide range of graded fabrics with solid European oak or black American walnut legs.

Maiden Home's Dune Sofa, handcrafted in North Carolina, offers a deep seat with plush cushioning and a relaxed slipcover, finished with hand-sewn flange seams.

Designer Josh Greene's collaboration with Lawson-Fenning includes a tufted sofa that is a part of a system that includes a lounge, ottoman, and chairs.

Soho Home's Faarell sofa has a solid oak frame that's crafted in the UK. The unique shape sports cotton velvet upholstery on a low-slung silhouette.

Christophe Delcourt's Palatine sofa for Roche Bobois features large cushions outlined by bold piping that draws the eye towards the piece's architectural qualities. Part of a program that includes a table, a sideboard and other seating, the collection is inspired by Italian design and craftsmanship.

The unique shape of Sarah Ellison's Muse sofa is both a selling point and a point of contention. It may be harder to mesh with certain decor styles, but it makes a big style statement in small spaces. There is also an ottoman and sectional option for larger rooms.

B&b Italia's Bibambola sofa is made in Italy in limited quantities. The removable covers also come in a variety of fun colorways.

Available as a sofa and sectional, Egg Collective's Howard sofa is an exceptional statement piece that doesn't skimp on comfort. Richter calls the seat fill "top notch," and also praises the sofa's versatility.

Mother of modern farmhouse Jenni Kayne's Aspen sofa is a sleek and casual take on classic mid-century styles. Available in plush bouclé "sherpa" upholstery in two muted tones, this is a versatile piece that will work in a variety of interiors.

This 3-seater sofa (the two-seater version of which has been featured in ELLE Decor) is a streamlined, elegant option that works with a variety of interior design styles. The modular system allows for unique configurations that can make the most out of your space.
